ShanghaiThe largest exhibition floor on earth, and a technology stack of its own

NECC and SNIEC give you exhibition scale nowhere else can match — but your registration platform, delegate app and payment rails all need rebuilding for the market.

The honest version

For anything that has to reach the Chinese market at scale, Shanghai is the venue. The National Exhibition and Convention Center is the largest exhibition complex in the world by floor area, SNIEC handles most of the major industrial shows, and the fabrication and logistics base around them is fast and cheap by international standards.

The part that catches Western organisers is digital. Your registration platform, delegate app, survey tool and analytics may be unreachable or unreliable inside the country, and delegates will expect to pay and check in through WeChat or Alipay rather than a card. That is an event technology project, not a footnote, and it needs to start early.

Best suited to

  • Large industrial and consumer trade shows
  • Market-entry launches and distributor conventions
  • Manufacturing and supply chain conferences
  • Exhibitor programmes and pavilion builds

Operating notes

What actually decides whether Shanghai works for you.

Airlift, hotel capacity, ground and season — in that order, and before anyone falls in love with a photograph.

01

Access and airlift

Pudong (PVG) handles long-haul, Hongqiao (SHA) domestic and regional. Visa-free transit and unilateral visa-free entry now cover a growing list of nationalities — confirm current policy per passport, because it changes often.

02

Hotels and capacity

Enormous inventory at every level, with strong international operators. Large blocks are straightforward outside major show weeks.

03

Ground and distance

Metro is extensive and reaches both exhibition complexes. Ride-hailing needs a local payment method, which is worth arranging for staff before arrival.

04

Season and calendar

March to May and September to November. Summer is hot and humid; avoid Chinese New Year and the October Golden Week entirely.
